With the announcement of a national demonstration on the day of the fees vote Oxford Right To Work activists immediately committed themselves to supporting students getting to London. A letter from the Cheney Joint protest group requesting support for the student protests was taken to Oxfordshire Health branch of UNISON who agreed to pay for a coach as many of their members had students in the family that would be deterred from university with increased tuition fees. An appeal was made to oxford and District Trades Council with the response of support from the NASUWT who donated £200 towards the coaches. Ruskin UCU also booked a coach. In all three coaches went from Oxford to the London demo filled with students from Ruskin, Oxford Uni, Cherwell, Cheney, European School, St. Gregory's, Wood Green and Oxford school to name a few.
They say a week is a long time in politics. In this case half a day was longer. Having successfully split the Liberal vote in the Coalition students connected with the vicious side of the Coalition government in the form of the London Metropolitan Police who threatened, bullied, charged, assaulted and kettled (denied, movement, food, water, warmth and toilet) to tens of thousands of people for wanting to protest outside parliament where their futures were being decided. The organisers managed to negotiate the with the drivers to hold the coaches long enough to get most people back to Oxford together. One student stayed behind to collect the remaining two who found themselves kettled to 11 pm on Westminster bridge without any way of getting home.
Despite the harsh treatment meted out the students were unbowed and determined to carry on the fight to end fees.

500 workers, students and service users united in opposition to the Con-Dem cuts. The demonstration, called by Oxfordshire Anti Cuts Alliance followed the successful 400 strong rally against the £87 billion cuts announced in the spending review on the 20th October. The demonstration had the support of FE students inspired by the recent occupation of Radcliffe Camera. The demonstration called at only ten days notice shows what is possible in the climate created by the 50,000 strong student protest in London on Nov 10th and subsequent occupations. |

Student anger at the Browne review and ConDem's education cuts boiled over onto the streets of Oxford on Thursday. More than 2000 protestors joined a march around the town that was initially sparked by a planned visit from business secretary Vince Cable. The strong response to a facebook page set up to publicise the protest had caused Cable to cancel on the eve of his proposed talk at the Oxford university examination halls.
